Mark Zuckerberg’s recap on 2018 is a little bizarre to say the least. The post, which is a little over 1000 words worth, is definitely worded carefully. In fact for the most part there’s no mention of scandals in 2018. Despite this being the most scandal ridden year in the company’s history. Zuckerberg also makes no apologies in the post, but does say he’s proud of Facebook three times.

Zuckerberg acknowledges much of the established real issues that Facebook has been plagued with: election interference, misinformation etc. To Facebook’s credit they’ve made large efforts towards tackling some of these issues. Zuckerberg outlines how the company is working with law enforcement agencies around the world and hiring large independent teams all in an attempt to tackle these issues.

Where Zuckerberg was a little more choice with his words was in relation to the tumultuous year of scandals that the company has had. He briefly acknowledges the Cambridge Analytica scandal. But other than that there was no mention of the other privacy related breaches which have affected millions of users. Nor was there any mention of Facebook’s Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos’s departure in August.

“We’ve fundamentally altered our DNA to focus more on preventing harm in all our services”

At this point in my opinion I’d say Facebook needs to take this statement to heart and really double down on winning back the hearts of their user base. That and a scandal free 2019 wouldn’t be such a bad thing either. Right now though Mark Zuckerberg’s post reads like a CEO who is deeply out of touch with the reality of their companies current situation.
